Our Packaging — Meliora Cleaning Products

Our Packaging

Waste reduction is at the core of our product development. We design and package every product with our environmental impact in mind, and look for innovative ways to go beyond the status quo to make more responsible cleaning products. This page lists the materials used in all our product packaging.

All our products are free of single-use plastic and many are completely plastic-free. Most of our packaging is reusable and we offer zero-waste and low-waste refill options.

By making concentrated powders, solid soap bars, and refill tablets, we eliminate the need for added preservatives or unnecessary plastic, like single-use plastic bottles, hidden liners, or PVA pods and sheets.

Our Packaging Materials

Our product packaging is made primarily of paper, steel, and glass. Our shipping materials are all cardboard and paper.

While we aim to use as little plastic as possible, our bulk powder buckets and the sprayer in our reusable glass spray bottle are made with plastic.

We use plastic sprayers because they do not clog up or rust when used to dispense soap. The bottle itself is glass and is designed to be refilled and reused continuously with our plastic-free refill tablets.

We use plastic buckets because they are highly durable, effectively seal powder against moisture, and are easy to clean and reuse. Each bucket comes with a pre-paid shipping label so you can send it back to us to be reused for the next person.

What is paper packaging used for?

Our powder canisters are made with uncoated thick paper tubes and steel ends. The labels are printed on uncoated paper. Our powder refill bags are made from brown kraft paper coated with a water-based barrier lining and labels printed on the outside.

All our solid soap bars and refill tablets are packaged in paperboard boxes. Product information on the boxes is printedusing vegetable-based inks.

Finally, we use uncoated kraft paper to cushion products inside shipping boxes and paper tape to seal shipping boxes.

Is paper recyclable?

Paper and paperboard are highly recyclable materials that are accepted by recycling services in most communities. Wet, greasy, or food-stained paper cannot be recycled. Coated paper cannot be recycled, with the exception of paper coated with water-based lining that does not contain plastic. All paper and paperboard used in Meliora Cleaning Products is recyclable and compostable at home or commercial composting sites.

What is cardboard packaging used for?

We use uncoated corrugated cardboard boxes for shipping.

Is cardboard recyclable?

Cardboard is a highly recyclable material that is accepted by recycling services in most communities. Both corrugated cardboard and flat paperboard are recyclable. However, some types of waxed or coated cardboard may not be recycled. Wet or food-stained cardboard, such as used pizza boxes, cannot be recycled. All cardboard used in Meliora Cleaning Products is recyclable. We recommend separating the cardboard from steel and other packaging materials before recycling. The cardboard we use is also compostable at home or commercial composting sites.

What is steel packaging used for?

Our powder canisters are made with steel ends and caps attached to cardboard tubes. We also sell stainless steel scoops individually and with our Laundry Powder canisters.

Is steel recyclable?

Steel is a highly recyclable material that is accepted by recycling services in most communities. Both steel and stainless steel can be recycled, but the process for recycling each material differs because stainless steel is non-magnetic and each has a different melting point. While steel goes through a sorting process, some materials like paper labels may still be attached when it goes into a furnace and burn off. For this reason, we recommend separating the steel from cardboard and other packaging materials before recycling.

What is glass packaging used for?

Our All-Purpose Home Cleaner is packaged in a reusable glass bottle with a plastic sprayer. We also sell empty glass spray bottles.

Is glass recyclable?

Glass is a recyclable material, and many glass items used in household applications are accepted by recycling services in most communities. Most glass used to make containers, such as bottles and jars, is recyclable. Glass used for other applications, such as light bulbs, windows, mirrors, and cookware is often treated with additional chemicals and is therefore not recyclable. All glass used in Meliora Cleaning Products is recyclable and designed to be reused with refill tablets.

What is plastic packaging used for?

Our All-Purpose Home Cleaner is packaged in a reusable glass bottle with a plastic sprayer. Plastic is the only effective material for making sprayers that do not clog up or rust when used to dispense soap. However, the bottle is designed to be refilled and reused continuously with our plastic-free refill tablets.

We also use 5-gallon plastic buckets for our bulk bucket program. Plastic buckets are highly durable, effectively seal powder against moisture, and are easy to clean and reuse. Each bucket comes with a pre-paid shipping label so you can send it back to us to be reused for the next person.

Our glass spray bottle and buckets also use water-resistant plastic labels designed to hold up to multiple uses.

Is plastic recyclable?

Plastic cannot be recycled effectively. The recycling rate of plastic is very low, and the process of sorting and reprocessing plastic is complex and ineffective. Moreover, plastic is flammable and absorbs toxic chemicals, making it dangerous to recycle. The best solution we have is to reduce the amount of plastic used. Our products are designed to eliminate single-use plastic and eliminate unnecessary plastic packaging and shipping materials.
